Today, we held the 3rd EkoSkola Young Peoples Environmnetal Summit at Le Méridien Hotel, St Julians, a Green Key Hotel. Students’ concerns about various environmental issues were tackled in several workshops. These were: Managing our Energy resources; Waste: a resourceful nuisance; Water: conserving a precious resource; Sustainability starts with the Family; and Student Empowerment. Students from 35 schools were present. All students were engaged in discussions in different groups with • Chief of Staff Mr Joseph Montebello from the Ministry for Energy and Water Conservation to discuss energy issues, • Hon. Leo Brincat - Minister for the Environment, Sustainable Development and Climate Change to discuss waste issues, • Hon. Marie Louise Coleiro Preca - Minister for the Family and Social Solidarity to follow the family workshop, • Hon. Evarist Bartolo - Minister for Education and Employment who will be following the workshop focusing on student empowerment. Ing Manuel Sapiano was also present to follow the water issue which is being linked to the Catch the Drop Campaign by HSBC. and other representatives and local experts from various sectors. The workshops were led by EkoSkola teachers and a declaration was teased out from the students’ concerns and recommendations. The declaration will be presented as a motion for approval at Parliament when the 10th EkoSkola parliamentary session convenes later this year.
