Today we lost the Steve Jobs of fun. Hobie Alter died today at age 80. There are few men who contributed more to surfing, sailing and the beach lifestyle of the 60s and 70s. He was an innovator and a reluctant entrepreneur who influenced me and many of the kids I grew up with. We bought our school clothes from his first shop on coast hwy in Dana Point. I got at least 2 or 3 skateboards from him. My Dad bought us a rare Hobie 12 and later I raced Hobie 16s in Hawaii in summers away from college. He designed one of the best sail planes ever, polarized sun glasses, fly fishing float cats, countless sailboats, first foam production surfboards, skateboards etc etc. In High School he would have a booth at our career day where he would stand at a simple table and talk to any kid who was interested about following your dreams and working in fields that made you happy. Amazingly, I found him alone and he talked to me for as long as I wanted. Success comes to those who follow their passions. No better example than Hobie. Im still trying to have the courage to follow mine. RIP Hobie your influence will live on without you. Thank you and everyone Have a Hobie Day!
