Today we pause to honor those who have selflessly sacrificed their lives, time and minds for their country. While we are often honored with free meals and discounts, the true fight is our sanity and homelessness. There is no reason a vet should have to sit in the dark room of shame, fighting the demons that threaten to overwhelm them at any given time. There is no reason a vet should have to sleep under the stars not knowing if the next day will be his last. We often talk a big game when it comes to vets, about the same big game talked to minorities in this country. I as a vet and an African American male am tired of the second class citizen status. The only time we ever get acknowledgment is on veterans day or black history month.
