Today we received our memorial hoodies today. We ordered them the week between his death and funeral. I had decided if we never got them it was ok because we knew the money would go towards a good cause. So since I got it I havent taken it off. It sparked a conversation between a plain clothed officer and I at Kwik Shop today. We had a great conversation about how and why I wearing it. If asked if I knew Cpl. Harwood and I told him no. He asked why I would want to wear it and I said.... I used to have no real respect for law enforcement. I didnt go around breaking the law but I thought like most folks did that they were just out to get everyone and they have a quota to fill. Until I got involved in our community and met some fantastic officers Green, Soden and more... Then we had the deaths of Gogian and Atherly. My family did what we could to help. I went to Washington and saw their names on the wall. I stood where their families stood. I fell in love with many of the wives and am in awe of what they can accomplish. A few months after I started volunteering with Operation Street Reach and there are collaborations with local law enforcement. I heard the news of Cpl. Harwood... I ran into his family leaving the emergency room on that fatal day and sat at the light at 8th and Lane when they were escorted to the LEC. I cried knowing his family would be without him. I didnt hesitate to try to find ways to help. She deserves our respect. I am not law enforcement but I respect what you all do and I respect that some of you may not come home. Then I told him about the fundraiser at the BP.... (poor guy got an earful) Bottom line is we dont force them into this line of work, but they are born to do it. They are honorable and keep my family safe. I have much respect for their wives because they have been shown their spouses may not come home. I pray for our law enforcement and that our community wont have to go through this again and someone wont loose a spouse to an idiot with a weapon. I love my hoodie, wish I didnt have to wear it, wish he was sitting at home with is family.... But if my family can wear our hoodies so that folks will always remember CPL.
