Today we remember an Honoree from our Seats of Honor program. Edward “Barney” James Broms, Jr. was born in Meadville, PA, in 1943. Jim entered the United States Naval Academy in June 1961 by congressional appointment, and received his Navy Wings in 1967. He flew with squadron VA-66 attached to USS Intrepid and deployed to the Gulf of Tonkin. On this day in 1968, while flying a mission over North Vietnam, Jim’s A-4C Skyhawk encountered enemy fire and was lost. With the crash site behind enemy lines, he was listed as missing in action for 43 years. In 2011, positive identification was made on remains found near the crash site and Jim was finally laid to rest with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery on September 7, 2012. On Memorial Day 2013, Jim’s sister, Marjorie Broms Waddell, joined us in dedicating a Seat of Honor in memory of Jim’s service to his country. Today we remember Jim and all service men and women considered missing in action. If you are interested in learning more about our Honorees, please visit our website: bit.ly/14G0tdg
