Today we resume the main narrative of our story. In review of where we are in the story, Israel has been invaded by Assyria, and the Assyrian empire has grown very powerful. Other nations such as Ethiopia, and Egypt were also concerned about possible invasion and takeover by the Assyrians. We begin our reading with Isaiah giving these nations prophecy on what will be happening to them in the near future. As I read some of these prophecies, my jaw dropped open! I couldnt help but see the connection with what Isaiah is telling those ancient nations and what is going on in the Middle East today. Now keep in mind that these prophecies are always near and far, so Isaiah was addressing the situation that Judah was facing at that time. He was addressing the surrounding nations and what they were going through at that time, as well. What I find fascinating is how relevant these prophecies are for us today. Notice the message Isaiah gave to Egypt, and Jerusalem, and look at what is currently going on in the Middle East. Last I heard, Israel was seeking the aid of Egypt to help with the current conflict they are having with Hamas. As it turns out, Hamas violated the truce before the ink dried on the paper. Isaiah was addressing the situation where Jerusalem was considering an alliance with Egypt against Assyria. He was advising that they put their faith in the Lord, because the Lord assured him that Assyria would fall in His own time. In Isaiahs time, Egypt was known for their wisdom, but here its wise men and counselors were deceived and foolish. They would not listen to Isaiahs advice, and would wind up being chastened by the Lord. The prophecy tells us that Egypt would eventually turn from idols and worship the one true God. The prophecy also said that Egypt and Assyria, who were known enemies, would one day unite in worshiping the one true God. This prophecy has not yet been filled, but we anticipate that it will be filled in that day when Christ comes to reign. Isaiah also addresses Edom (which would now be located somewhere between Jordan and Saudi Arabia, Babylon (Iraq), and Saudi Arabia. All these nations currently surround Israel, .and are very much part of the current political atmosphere in the Middle East. In Isaiahs address to Babylon, he prophesied that Babylon will fall to the Medes, and that will happen during some sort of a feast.... Look! They are preparing a great feast. They are spreading rugs for people to sit on.Everyone is eating and drinking. But quick! Grab your shields and prepare for battle. You are being attacked! Isaiah 21:5 This prophecy would be fulfilled in the Book of Daniel in Chapter 5 when the Medes and Persians launched a surprise attack on Babylon while the king was having a feast. The main message that the Lord was sending these nations was to turn to Him and trust Him. It is the same message, and desire He has for us today. youtube/watch?v=ewESanX3Pmo
