Today we said goodbye to our 14 year-old hospice dog, Bear. It was a heart-wrenching decision, but he let us know it was time. My heart hurts so badly, but I know he is in a better place, pain free. Dr Clovis was kind enough to come to our home so Bear could go to sleep forever on his favorite bed. We rescued Bear from a shelter in California in February. His owner just dropped him off because he was old. Bear lived outside in a kennel on a concrete floor. He was matted all the way down to the skin and negleted for quite some time. He was hard of hearing, had dry eye so bad his eyes were stuck shut, and many lumps and bumps as well as a fungal infection. He was flown to us by Yehuda at Wings of Rescue on February 6th. He was very ill when he arrived, mostly likely due to the stress of flying, and we had to have him hospitalized until he was stable. Once he recovered he settled right in and loved his freedom. Being that he was a hospice dog he got to do do whatever he wanted! He went on walk-a-bouts every single morning and covered quite a bit of ground for an old man. Sometimes he would come back and just lay down in the grass and wait for you to bring him his breakfast and other times he would wait patiently in the kitchen for you to dish it up. Then it was nap time on the couch. He loved to chase us and play even though he was arthritic and hobbled around. He really enjoyed grabbing our pant legs and tugging on them until we ran from him again! Bear had a slow, laid back kind of life for the last 7 months. He was peaceful and relaxed...safe. He was spoiled rotten and showered with love every single day. We could not have loved him more...he was such an amazing dog with a very wise presence. He lived more in the last 7 months than in the last 13 years, Im sure. Rest well big buddy, you are missed so much already
