Today we visited Madrasah Hashimiah, Selayang. The visit was a fruitful one. We didnt go with bags of rice, bottles of oil, cans of milk as we were told that they have been loaded with the basic necessities since their story went viral. We were asked to come and view the place on our own. The madrasah occupies the 1st, 2nd & 3rd floors, rental of the place being paid by a NGO Buddhist group named Tzu Chi ( yes the irony of it) .. housing more than 180 students during the day and about 40 boarders aged 5- 18 year old Rohingyan children. As we climbed the staircases little boys were going up and down. They greeted us with assalamualaikum and actually took our hands and kissed them. Such adorable souls.. We chat with the caretaker En. Hadi, a young, humble and well- mannered man. He explained to us that these children have their classes i. e Quranic classes, fardhu ain, B. M lessons (twice a week), English lesson (once a week). There are a few ustazs to help with the Quranic n Fardhu Ain classes. 2 paid B. M teachers and 2 volunteer English teachers. Mind you only about a dozen of teachers to man the 180 children hungry for knowledge. These children do not have the opportunity to be in public schools due to their status. Parents of these children have problems with their living status and work day n night to make ends meet. The 40 little borders sleep on the floor with no mattresses but that didnt bother any of them. Ustaz Hashim, the founder of the madrasah did say that all these Rohingyan children need to be given at least basic Islamic knowledge. He hopes that these children will be able to be good muslims when they leave the madrasah. He also told us that many have approached him to relocate the madrasah and wakaf a bigger place for the children from the present location. He refused as he feels that his nawaitu to help the hundreds of Rohingyan children in the vicinity will not be achieved. If they move, he will only help a small number of the children as most will not leave their present home what will then happen to the rest of the children that are left behind. Where will they seek for knowledge? Where will they get the Islamic guidance that they need? Basically what they need are: - a bigger place near their present location. - on- going volunteers to help man the classes - on-going monetary donations to purchase raw food i. e fish, chicken, pay bills, wages etc (amounting to more than rm 10k a month). We had a brief discussion with the management on ideas to generate income for the madrasah sustainability. We are hoping that this would be seriously taken up by them for the future of the forgotten Rohingyan children.
