Today we visited the Tongerlo Abbey (AD 1130) Belgium. Il faut le voyage! When in 1506 The French conquered Milan, King Louis XII demanded to bring to Paris Leonardo da Vincis famous work The Last Supper but this was impossible because it is a wallpainting. Since the French victory the Duke of Milan was a prisoner of the French, Da Vinci could well use another sponsor, so he agreed to make an exact copy of his own work in oilpaint on linnen. Together with his team he created his second Last Supper which was transported to Amboise, France. Many years after that the large painting seemed lost untill it appeared again in Antwerp, where the Abbot of the rich and powerful Norbertine monastry in Tongerlo bought it in 1545. It is still there.
