Today, we were at Ecole Mondiale, a school in Mumbai, to conduct a workshop with ninth graders who have opted to study History as part of their curriculum. We were told that their Middle Years Programme requires them to consider concepts and ideas from multiple perspectives. They had learnt about the Partition in their eighth grade curriculum, and todays session was organized in order for them to revisit their learning in the light of new material about the Partition - a graphic novel, a childrens film, a form of Urdu storytelling, and an online archive. They also took a quiz on Pakistan, and engaged in a discussion around their perceptions of the other side. We were invited by our friend Tulika Bathija to conduct this workshop, in an attempt to help students develop critical thinking skills and challenge their notions about identity, nation, history and culture.
