Today went really good! I did about 35 miles! I packed up camp from Bellevue this morning and mailed some letters in town. Then I got on the river around 9:00 am. I hit the river hard. I was pushing 6 mph. The heat was sweltering. There was no wind and the sun was beating off the water. I was drenched in sweat. I just drank a lot of water, once I was drenched the heat didnt seam that bad. As I was paddling the Twilight Riverboat passed me! Im friends with the Captain, so he blew the horn for me! I made a brief bathroom stop in Savanna, Illinois. When I pulled up to the shore I met a guy named, John Tuthill. He is the owner of a quarry that loads barges. I was going to go into town for a Pepsi, but he drove me into town and bought me lunch at KFC! After eating I got back on the river, my goal was to get to Clinton, Iowa, today. As I was approaching lock and dam 13 there was an island full of birds! It looked like a nesting ground. There were thousands of pelicans, ducks, and blue herons! After getting right next to them I proceeded to head towards the lock. The wind was starting to pick up and was making the water choppy. I finally get to the lock and pull the signal cord. I tried pulling it three times, I didnt hear a noise or notice anyone recognizing me. I figured the cord wasnt working. Luckily Nick and Gabe, the two Marines who I met, gave me all the locks phone numbers! I called the lock and that fixed the problem! Turns out the signal cord was broke! Overall today was great! Ill take the heat over the rain and bad wind! I did 35 miles and made it too my goal!
