Today, while waiting in line at the store, I overheard two of the girls behind the counter making fun of their coworker who has noticeably crooked teeth. Not many of my recently acquired friends know this, but I grew up with teeth so overlapped & displaced that my orthodontist wasnt even sure they could ever be aligned normally. I spent the majority of my life incredibly anxious and uncomfortable with my smile due to the constant hurtful remarks that were made to me. Luckily, my dad was in a financial position that allowed him to provide me with corrective braces and years of dental appointments. Ive never taken this for granted and I also vowed to never, ever mock someone for their appearance. It saddens me that these girls were so ignorant and that they showed so little respect for the others feelings. To criticize another human being for something out of their control is one of the cruelest things you can do. I told the girl that she was beautiful the way that she was and I meant it. To me, a persons superficial appearance is irrelevant as far as character is concerned. Society may perceive the other two as more aesthetically appealing, but as long as they remain so ugly on the inside, ugliness is all Ill see.
