Todays Affirmation: I AM NOT A HYPOCRITE Everyone can see a hypocrite in action but the hypocrite. One of the fallible human tendencies we all have is our impulse for self-justification. We routinely find, without conscious effort, reasons to avoid responsibility for any personal actions which turn out to be harmful, immoral, or just plain stupid. Most of us will quickly dig in our feet and more tenaciously justify any action when we are openly confronted with evidence supporting a personal error. We may self-righteously speak ill of another person, exaggerating details to convert others to our own personal biased agenda over some real or perceived slight and still perceive ourselves as an innocent victim who desires nothing more than compassionate reconciliation. We speak ill of others than quickly demand others to apologize and make amends when they are caught speaking ill of us. This tendency to self-justify is more dangerous than an explicit lie. Self-justification keeps elements of our own character which need attending to remain buried beneath the surface of conscious awareness. There our flaws continue to fester. The longer they remain hidden the more insidious they become. The long term costs of avoiding key aspects of our personality is not cheap. Evidence of reality mounts and the mechanisms required to keep secrets from ourself accumulate in this internal cat and mouse game increasingly pulls us further and further from reality, requiring more and more resources which could be better used elsewhere in our personal development. When an interpersonal interaction with another personal triggers an emotional reaction it is an opportune time to explore the possible intrusion of self-righteous justifications into our feelings and thoughts. Being aware of the intrusions is a major part of the battle! ~Troy Murphy Flourishing Life Society
