Todays Ave Maria Hour has a Hudson Valley connection. It is the story of Mother Mary Alphonsa Lathrop, OP, who was the daughter of American writer, Nathaniel Hawthorne. Born in 1851, she became a Roman Catholic in 1881, and became a Dominican tertiary after the deaths of her son and husband. She and another Dominican sister began the Dominican Sisters of St. Rose of Lima, and dedicated themselves to caring for those suffering with incurable cancer. Today Rosary Hill, in Hawthorne, NY, has 72 palliative care beds and still serves the needy without money from insurance companies, Medicare or Medicaid. In 2003 she was named a Servant of God by Cardinal Egan. Listen to her story and more 30 minute episodes of this historical radio broad cast in the Ave Maria Radio Hour Archives:
