Todays Connecting the Dots #CTD- Race, Power, Privilege: As the USDA’s Census of Agriculture has shown, the number of Hispanic, Asian-American, and African-American farmers in the United States is growing, perhaps due to the efforts of organizations supporting minority farmers. While there are also more farm labor jobs available to hire the workers than there have been in years, the quality of these jobs is not improving. Few farm jobs are year-round, and more than half of U.S. farms that hire workers do so on a temporary basis, for less than six months, before leaving them to find a new job. Furthermore, more farms are now hiring workers through farm labor contractors; in these cases, it is much more common for the workers to be paid less than minimum wage. Temporary workers facing such job conditions lack the stability — and the income — necessary to save up enough to break out of this cycle of low-wage farm labor. onearth.org/articles/2014/07/whats-the-state-of-the-american-farm-the-usda-tackles-issues-of-growing-concern
