My favourite work on display is ‘Manifest’ (2001) by Hertha Kluge-Pott, which is an epic, delicate relief etching. bit.ly/nga241019 If you look closely, you can see the artist in the work; she’s the figure wearing overalls, being blown about a windy landscape. Sticking out at the top is a wonderful, tiny lighthouse. I love how the artist imagines this landscape as an intense ball of life and movement. The print encourages my favourite environment for looking at art – it is best enjoyed up close and personal, so that you can contemplate all the intimate quirks.
