Todays Lent Devotional is on Matthew 3 focus on v. 1-12 Make the Path Ready for Jesus Every summer, my family spends time outside enjoying the fire pit together roasting marshmallows and having a generally good time. If you have ever spent time around a fire, you’ll know that you can’t stay near it for more than a few minutes without smelling like smoke and ash, from your clothes to your hands and to your hair. So what do you do afterward? You have to wash it out. In verse 11, John says “I baptize you with water for repentance.” When we dirty ourselves, the most we can do normally is to take a shower or bathe to get the grime out. When we sin, we redeem ourselves in petition through prayer and declare our faith via water baptism, washing away our old lives. However, we know that water alone is not enough. That’s why “He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” The Spirit washes what water alone cannot; in the face of such constant darkness and sin, we are cleansed eternally through Christ. On this second day of Lent, remember that there is no sin so powerful that God is incapable of making us clean again. Knowing how great God’s love is for us and the enormity of His grace in forgiving us constantly should serve to make us humble. Lord, help me to remember that there is no sin so powerful that You cannot make us clean again. Help me to draw nearer to you when I feel farthest from you. Amen. Chris Y.
