Todays Mayan Tzolkin calendar day sign is Akbal or darkness. Our culture tends to associate darkness with evil and light with goodness. However darkness brings introspection, mediation and sleep whereas light can burn. Dark places were associated by the Maya with the watery Underworld and the Realm of the Ancestors. Night was the domain of Ix Chel, the moon goddess who both created and destroyed, and Tohil and Hurakan, gods of fate and fear. I challenge you today to face a place of darkness that you fear, perhaps a storm drain or that basement or attic you usually ignore. Try to figure out what your personal darkness is and whether you fear Dark places and silence. If so, perhaps it is not darkness or silence you fear but the content of your self that you try not to look at. Remember that what we hate most on others is what we fear finding in ourselves.
