Todays Music Box song comes from a garage band formed in the San Jose, California area. The Syndicate Of Sound, were popular in the clubs around the area. They won a Battle Of The Bands competition, beating out a hundred other acts at the San Mateo Teenage Worlds Fair. The prize was a trip to Los Angeles, a recording session at Del-Fi Records, and musical equipment. The resulting single, Prepare For Love/Tell The World, became a regional hit, from San Jose up to Oregon. Band members, Don Baskin, Bob Gonzalez, and John Sharkey continued writing new material and came up with Little Girl and You, which the band recorded at Hush Records, January 9th, 1966. Little Girl became a regional hit, which caught the attention of Bill Gavins tip sheet, and then executives at Bell Records, who distributed it nationally. Little Girl peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #5 on the Cashbox survey. The single became the Syndicate of Sounds only major hit. In a side note ... the single Little Girl was recognized at the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, from day one of the Halls existence and is displayed prominently in the one-hit-wonder section. Tomorrow, a young lady will be making her third appearance at the Music Box.
