State Ministers and district Collectors lifted the shutters in the Cauvery, Vennar and Grand Anicut canal systems. Water gushed out of the sluices much to the delight of onlookers and farmers. 4. Chennai- As the capital of Tamil Nadu is argu-ably the most urbanised city in the country, Chennai is in a race to contain garbage. For most residents, the sight of the trash compactor lorry carrying away the waste overflowing from street bins is a big relief. The quest for a Clean Chennai demands a multi-faceted response. The ‘city’ now extends to distant suburbs, and the Chennai Corporation’s official record puts the volume of garbage collected at over 4,500 tonnes a day, with each resident generating about 700 grams on average. 5. Sports-The Indian women’s hockey team finished on the podium of the junior World Cup for the first time, defeating England 3-2 on penalties in the bronze-medal play-off. This is the maiden success for the Indian women’s hockey team, across age groups, at the world level. Their best before this was a fourth place finish, at the 1974 World Cup and the 1980 Olympics.
