Todays Quotation: Keep a grateful journal. Every night, list five things that you are grateful for. What it will begin to do is change your perspective of your day and your life. Oprah Winfrey Todays Meditation: For many of us, when we appreciate something, it becomes easy for us to take that thing for granted, simply because we tend to forget how much we appreciate it. And being the forgetful person that I am, I tend to need constant reminders. Often, when the day passes by and new challenges and experiences present themselves, I forget the nice things from the prior day. But when I take the time to remind myself that there are things in my life for which I am grateful, I recognize how rich my life is, even in the midst of all the confusion and chaos. Another thing I work on is my focus throughout the day. If I can work on changing my perspectives to a more positive outlook, then I can get a much more accurate idea of what is going right in my life. Many of us tend to focus so long and so hard on the bad things that a bit of reality each night in the form of a simple list can do wonders to help us to realize just how many positive aspects of our lives we do, indeed, have. And Oprah is not suggesting anything out of the ordinary. Instead, she is suggesting an active exercise to counteract the passive approach that we so often find ourselves in. If we just let life happen, and pass us by, we may not even notice what went on. If we are not active in our own lives, then we are not really living--we are just existing; life, though, rewards action, and our perspectives can grow only if we actively exercise and expand them. Life is made up of a series of todays, and when we are able to change our perspective on today, our perspective on life as a whole will begin to shift as well. What we bring to those moments through our perspective is just as important as what actually happens in each moment, as our perspective affects our attitudes and our ability to learn and grow. Todays Challenge: Make a list of 20 things you are grateful for today. Questions to consider: What kinds of things do you have in your life today for which you can be grateful if you choose to be? How many positive things slip by us without our acknowledgment that they are, indeed, things for which to be grateful? Why do so few of us take an active approach to our lives? For further thought: Sometimes we need to remind ourselves that thankfulness is indeed virtue. William J. Bennett
