Todays #RandomObscureReference is Quarterlife. Since today, Amazons giving everybody a chance to stream the Golden Globe winning series, Transparent, (And BTW, if youre missing it, shame on you, its really good; Im hoping I can get through the first season before the clock runs out.) but a small footnote now, in the history of Television on the internet, is Quarterlife, the first internet series that actually jumped and got on TV for a major network. Created as part-movement and part television series from Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick, the same team behind shows like Thirtysomething and My So-Called Life, the show followed a group of characters at that between time after college to when they really solidify themselves as people and into a career path, and was based around the character, Dylan, a copyright editor at a magazine whose ramblings complaints on her blog, suddenly and unexpectedly become overly-popular. The show, unfortunately, after one airing on NBC, became one of the lowest rated of the year, and the rest of the six-episode run was pushed to Bravo, which also was barely noticed. While theres been an occasional exception like Web Therapy that starts as an online show and then transitions to television, this set the precedent for the thought that a show could succeed while only being available on the internet, and essentially, invented the possibility of internet channels like Netflix or Amazon having equal success outside of the traditional television outlets. https://youtube/watch?v=lSeazwhILo4&list=PLE8E7640240ECA6DA&index=36
