Todays Reflection: AT GREAT EFFORT and expense, most of us - TopicsExpress

Todays Reflection: AT GREAT EFFORT and expense, most of us strive to become independent and self-sufficient. Our society places great value on possessing the resources that care for our individual wants and needs. Extreme signs of dependency or co-dependency are seen as unhealthy and addictive traits from which we must seek release. We go to workshops and seminars, and we engage in professional therapy in private attempts to break the relational cycles that are abusive and destructive to our individual, essential personhood. Rugged individualism, called by many names and disguised in many ways, is an idol to which we still bow and give allegiance. We seem to have forgotten that beyond the denial and negation of dependence lies the fragile and delicate balance of interdependence. The Canaanite woman [in Matthew 15:21-28] reminds us that our Christian commission is to extend the Lord’s table to all. This table nurtures us toward interdependence with our neighbor rather than independence. - Helen Bruch Pearson Do What You Have the Power to Do
