Todays True Value Home Improvement Hour on KDKA radio focused a lot on air filters and humidifiers. With the colder temps, comes drier air that robs your skin and wood furnishings of moisture. Circulating air can blow undesired dust and other allergens through your home. Andy Amhrein and Mike Broniszewski discussed the various types of air filters- metal, fiberglass, and pleated- and reminded listeners to change out your air filters frequently (about once a month for fiberglass, every 3 months for pleated). A helpful tool was developed by 3M to help rate the effectiveness of an air filter to remove dust, viruses, pollen, dust mite debris, bacteria and other particulate matter from your environment- the Microparticle Performance Rating (MPR). For those of you with a metal mesh filter, the TV Hardware guys recommend cleaning them monthly and applying Aprilaires Filtercoat spray to improve the efficiency. If you want to save money, dont get your Aprilaire filters from your HVAC company; buy them at True Value and change them out yourself. The True Value experts also remind you to change out your humidifier pads yearly!
