Todays X1.6 flare from AR12205 peaked at 17:26 UT (12:26 EST). This is the first X flare from a region that has been prolific with M flares since before it rotated into view. The flare produced short-lived degradation to HF radio communications on the daylight side of Earth. There was a coronal mass ejection (CME) associated with the eruption that was not Earth directed and not very fast. We await further information from computer models about the CME. Here is a video of the eruption recorded by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). The images are composites of 171, 193 and 131 angstrom images. credit: NASA/SDO
