Todays classroom experience as a young educator is amazing. Educating never cease to amaze me. 1. My 8 year olds learnt about respecting and practicing sensitivity towards their fellow friends who are fasting. Two non-Muslim boys drank water in front of my two Muslim students, a boy and a girl. The boy had an annoyed, tortured look on his face and covered his eyes whereas the girl had self-control and handled herself well. So I sat them down in a circle, explained to them why and how to be sensitive and polite to everyone around them. Shared with them possible scenarios and what they can do if they were to be in such situations (especially classrooms). Asked the two boys apologize to the boy and girl and everybody was happy. 2. Reinforced and made it clear to my 10 - 11 year olds on cultivating the habit to ask instead of keeping quiet and not really learning anything. Teachers, if you are to face a hoard of students questioning you during or after lessons, dont be mad at them or labelling them slow or stupid under your breathe. It is a sign you should review your techniques or lesson plans, identify where you have gone wrong or what you have missed out. Teaching is a learning process. Not a top-down approach. 3. A 10 year old boy stayed back about ten minutes to complete the class worksheet. I observed him from the beginning of the class and continously asked him if he needed help, he said he could do it on his own. So I trusted him and waited. Everyone else was faster than him and had already left. When he handed in the paper, I marked it and he got it all right. I praised him saying he did a very good job. He sheepishly smiled and said, Sorry teacher. I am a bit slow. I felt a pang in my heart and was reminded how that felt. I told him not to apologize and reminded the story of the tortoise and the hare. He smiled and nodded saying he remembers the story. Thanked me and rushed off to his mom. Thank you God, for these beautiful experiences. I am learning every time I put myself in front of these kids.
