Todays topic comes from an anonymous DJ: I wanted to let you in - TopicsExpress

Todays topic comes from an anonymous DJ: I wanted to let you in on a bit of an experiment that I had played at my local WCS dance last weekend. Not gonna lie, it was mostly as a reaction to having a bunch of rude whiners from the boom tick/modern music lovers in the room while DJing a previous evening. The experiment was a pre-emptive strike in case there is any grumblings for the next one. I was previously told that I needed to stay up to date with what was out there and that people wanted to dance to what is currently being played on the competition circuit. (I had previously veered towards new-ish music but not necessarily modern styles.) It took a really long time for me to put together. I want you to know that almost every song I played was played was from major competitions from this year or was from DJ Gbls channel or similar discussion groups. (In the two hours, there were a handful of tunes at best that were goofs and may not have been on the circuit but the floor didnt clear and there was one real floor clearing bomb.) Yes, I was playing some stuff that I didnt particularly enjoy but it was part of the experiment. Guess what? Much of the same group was still upset. Each scene, event and evening has just a bit different mood. I feel that part of DJing is to try and appeal to as many people (who are in the room at the time) as possible. Mix it up a bit and to include some new songs, some old ones and try and reach out to get them on the floor. You may not know every word to all the songs being played. Not every person is going to like every single song either. Only like the funk, soul, blues tunes? Only like the boom tick modern POP songs? Expect that a room will ONLY have the style that you like? How fair is that? I feel that if you are closed minded and/or bully DJs into only doing 1/2 the equation, then youll be alienating part of your scenes dance population and doing them a dis-service. Why? When you hit the big events youll be missing out on some prime dancing OR youll be screwed for comps not knowing how to deal with diverse styles of music. Realize that when DJs experiment they are able to find that kewl gem and new hit that says with you. I believe in every style there will be songs that appeal to you more than others. Please try and keep an open mind. If a certain song irks you or isnt your style, why not take a break? Vote with your feet. It is how DJs figure out if they are on or off and they adjust. Variety is what can keep things fresh.
