Todays dogwalking adventure: My 70lb dog encountered a coyote who - TopicsExpress

Todays dogwalking adventure: My 70lb dog encountered a coyote who was rabbit hunting (the rabbit ran past me to get away) and took off after the coyote (who was bigger than my dog!). The coyote led him on a 15 minute chase through the woods and the neighboring golf course. Thanks to my new GPS collar purchased three weeks ago, i was able to follow them as they got further and further away (the furthest was 800 yards away!). The coyote stayed about 15 feet in front of my dog the entire time. When my dog got tired and slowed down, the coyote slowed down so that he was always just in front of him. As I was finally nearing them on the fairway, the coyote stopped in the middle of the fairway and WAITED for my dog, who then started running after him again. At this point, I was close enough to my dog to get his attention, and he came to me. The coyote trotted into some nearby bushes, and then, as we were walking back to my car, the coyote emerged from the bushed, trotted right toward us and stopped about twenty-feet away, staring at my dog, who was, of course barking again and trying to chase him. The coyote then moved about 20 feet away, then looked back over his shoulder at my dog, waiting for him. He continued this activity until he finally disappeared from sight into the woods at the far end of the golf course. The coyote was CLEARLY doing his best to tempt my dog into chasing him, and had intentionally lured my dog on this chase all over the place. I have heard that coyotes will lure dogs to their waiting pack, who will then take the dog down together. Either the coyote was planning to do this, or simply was amusing itself having my dog chase it (although my dog was not playing, and was definitely trying to get the coyote). All I can say is that if I didnt have my GPS on him (thank you Garmin!), I would no longer have my dog, either because he was irretrievably lost, or because he got eaten by coyotes. The thing that really struck me was that this coyote was bigger than my 70lb dog, and that he was not remotely afraid of either one of us. So, that is my adventure for today. I think this afternoons dog walk will be in a different place...
