Todays featured animal is our Eastern Milk Snake, Elsie. She is a Michigan native, which means you could find her right in your own backyard! Eastern milk snakes can be 2-4 feet long. They have a tan or gray base color with brown or red spots running down their backs. One of their coolest patterns in on their belly, which is black and white checkered. Milk snakes got their name because they often hang out around farm building and eat the rats and mice that live inside. Which means if you find one in your backyard, it is important to leave it there. Eastern milk snakes, like Elsie, are harmless to humans and they do a great job at helping to control pests around our homes. If you have to move a wild eastern milk snake, use caution. They can rattle their tail and bite if they feel threatened, but given the opportunity, they will always run away from you rather than bite. But in Elsie’s case, she doesnt mind being held by our education staff at all. Her beautiful colors and sweet nature make her a great little snake to work with. Elsie lives in our Conservation Discovery Center here at the Zoo. P.J. Kohn Zookeeper
