Greg Jackson, MMA Coach. The Sympathetic and parasympathetic systems are your fight or flight response to a situation. The way you breathe can tell your opponent if your hurting or relaxed in the match. If you are breathing through your nose, signals are heading to the brain say everything is cool, no trouble. As the match goes on and you begin running more, the brain starts talking hey get more oxygen up here and Hey you, open your mouth! Racquetball players, being predators, will see that jaw drop and know you are tired! What can you do to recover faster and avoid mouth breathing? Slow things down, take a time out, or hit more ceiling balls? Sure discuss that with your coach. But how about a couple of nice deep breaths between rallies? Your opponent wont be able to tell that you are (tired) recovering. As you get ready to serve or return the serve, close your mouth, take a breath as deep as you can, making your belly big and expanding your lower rib cage. Slowly exhale, and serve. Practice this in games at the club and in competition you will not even think about it!
