Todays hero of the day is my daughter, Marie. Im not one to post a ton of pictures of her, out of a sense of protectiveness. I love her for so many reasons, but above all because of her compassion. Plenty of people on the earth suffer, and arent nicer for it. I remember being shocked that living through hard times did not generate empathy by default, and that some people who cried easily for themselves, could sometimes be unmoved by the plight of others. My little girl though, does get through her own medical situations, without losing sight of the struggles other people encounter, whether in real life or on the Disney Channel. Recently, on a difficult night at the hospital, in the ER, my baby turned to me, concerned that I did not have a bed to lie down in, as well. This statement of concern was interjected in the middle of a night when morphine didnt touch her pain. I needed a bed right then, because I was practically knocked over that she could still be aware of someone else. Another time, we were watching the show Jessie which is about a Nanny who watches a family full of rich kids, along with the butler. I remarked that these kids hardly ever saw their parents. Her reply was, Its a lot like an orphanage. Her insights sometimes cut straight to the chase, and I love being a part of the conversation. You know somebody is inspiring when they can make an Usher fan think about Country Western songs, about living up to who we want to be in Our Daughters Eyes. What else I like about Marie is that she is fair. She will call someone on the carpet in a hot second, if she notices discrepancies. Marie doesnt make excuses for bad behavior, and she doesnt seek credit or recognition for good behavior or achievement, (though she does like an audience if she is doing some type of dance.) For the last couple of months, weve had a The other day we had a contest to see who could read the Wimpy Kid Diary Books the fastest. She finished Book 7 before I got to Book 5. When Marie won, she immediately pointed out that she had an unfair advantage because I was often doing chores while she read. Last but not least, I love Maries sense of humor, and I love to hear her take on life at school. She is still a kid, that has to be guided and corrected like any other kid, but she also strives to do her best. And I cant help but strive to do mine. Really she is my hero everyday.
