Todays muscial RX is an unbelievable recording by Zakk Wylde. Now everyone knows Im a huge Zakk nutswinger. I bought this album when it first came out back in 1996. Ozzy had decided he was going to retire so Zakk forged ahead with a solo career releasing this wonderfully written and composed solo album. Yes it still has alot of the trademark killer guitar solos but the songs and structures were more laidback. Zakk was still being influenced by southern rock at the time and it clearly shows in his writing and playing. One can hear The Eagles, Skynyrd, Allman Brothers in his playing on this album. Alot of acoustic guitars, slide work and piano. His voice has the grit of Gregg Allman and the growl of Ronnie Van Zant. If you think Zakk is all metal because of Ozzy and Black Label Society I urge you to listen to this disc. I think you will be amazed by what you hear. Ive yet to meet anyone he dislikes this record. So today from one of my top 10 favorite guitar players and one of my idols is Mondays musical masterpiece the great Book Of Shadows by Zakk Wylde. Book of Shadows is the first solo album by the heavy metal guitarist Zakk Wylde. The album was first released in 1996, and was reissued by Spitfire in 1999 with the bonus disc containing Evil Ways (the Japanese bonus track from the albums original release), The Color Green, and Peddlers of Death (an acoustic version of a track that features on Black Label Societys Sonic Brew). Unlike his work with Ozzy Osbourne and Black Label Society, here Zakk Wylde shows a different side to his music; an introspective and mostly acoustic style recalling many of the lighter moments from his previous project, Pride & Glory as well as classic folk rock artists such as Neil Young. Promotional singles were released for Between Heaven and Hell and Way Beyond Empty, the latter of which also had an accompanying music video. Throwin It All Away was written about the death of Layne Staley. Zakk and Layne had become close friends a few months before he died of a drug overdose.
