Todays thoughtful question from a young reader, who wanted to know if I outline/draft my novels: Reading your books, throughout the book you seem to know exactly how it ends and every little thing in between, as if youve already written the ending (probably through many drafts). My answer: Nope. I never outline. I never know how things will resolve until the ending presents itself to me, usually very near the actual conclusion. And I DO NOT DRAFT. I write one time through, and I aim for as close as I can get to perfection with each line. You wouldnt draft build a house and then go back and fix all the horrible defects in the structure after you finish construction. Why would anyone think thats a smart--or safe--way to write a book?
