Todays tidbit He a was a four—legged champion at the age of 3, and would eventually retire at a ranch in Douglas, Wyoming. Sir Barton was world famous back in 1919, the fastest high stakes racehorse on the planet. He won horseracing’s Triple Crown that year, the first ever to win the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and the Belmont in the same season. This chestnut thoroughbred retired once, in Virginia. But somehow ended up in Nebraska, working with the U.S. Remount Service in the early 1930′s. The great champion finally found a home in Wyoming to live out his remaining years. It was Douglas rancher, J.R. Hylton, who bought and brought Sir Barton to Wyoming. That’s where the first Triple Crown winner would pass, at age 21, in 1937. There’s a very nice statue of Sir Barton in Washington Park in Douglas, at his final resting place. He was horse racing royalty, the first ever to win his sport’s biggest prize, and a member of horseracing’s Hall of Fame. And, in the end, a resident of the Cowboy State.
