Today’s “Thought Of The Day” comes from Fabian Débora, our Resident Artist and Substance Abuse Counselor. He spoke about a recent experience leading children in an art activity. He went to an elementary school in Boyle Heights and had the children draw something important to them as part of a community path activity and share their drawing in front of the group. Fabian described the images that these children shared and their painful experiences, and how he used art as a way to get them to reflect and grow rather than let this pain define them. He says that this was possible because they recognized him as no different than them, which allowed them to look at themselves in a mirror. He then thanked those at Homeboy Industries for no longer contributing to the pain and violence like these children have seen and recognized that while there is still a long way to go, there is progress being made.
