Today’s events: the graves of Tolkien and Lewis (different cemeteries, both in the Oxford area); Lewis’s house (The Kilns) and pond out back (now part of a nature preserve); and Highclere Castle (aka Downton Abbey). When we got to Wolvercote cemetery, where Tolkien, his wife, and his eldest son John are at rest, we discovered that prior visitors had left flowers, coins, poems, and little gifts. We wanted to do something like that too, so as we were thinking about it, Lee looked down at the turf and spied the dragon-shaped piece of bark you see here.
