Today’s rant (and pardon my language, but its uncensored, that’s why it’s called a “rant”) : If you post pictures of headless fat people or badly-dressed “People of Walmart” just so you and your friends can have a good laugh, I’m sorry, but you are an asshole. A now-unfriended acquaintance of mine just did that. A back shot of a fat woman out shopping, walking down the street wearing a pair of very tight short shorts. And the comments were atrocious! “I bet she doesn’t have any friends,” “Doesn’t she realize what she looks like?” “Wow, no self-respect,” “Wants to be a size 8 but eats like a size 18,” and other nasty comments. Well, you know what I say? I say good for her for not giving a damn what anyone else thinks! Who are we to pass judgment on *her* body or *her* fashion choices? Why is her body fair game for being mocked just because she dares to go out & walk down a public street? Womens bodies are not public property, and I would hope we can all be a bit more mature than a bunch of catty middle school girls. I feel sorry for anyone who is so insecure that they have to make themselves feel better by making fun of some poor woman theyve never even met. It wasnt too long ago that respectable people made snide comments about women who wore pants in public, or black people who wore their hair “natural,” or anyone who had a visible tattoo; but now we consider those judgmental people to be prudes & jerks. “She has no self-respect, why would she dress like that, doesn’t she realize what she looks like, no man will ever want a woman like that…” Exact. Same. Judgmental. Small-minded. Bullshit. I wear clothes for me. No one else. Maybe they have sentimental value. Maybe its laundry day. Maybe they don’t quite fit but I really like the color and style. Maybe its hot outside and they are very comfortable. But it doesn’t matter, because its no one elses business, its MY body. If you dont like it, dont wear it yourself, and feel free to not look at me. But taking my picture just so you can mock me online and feel all superior is a shitty thing to do to anyone. Id like to someday live in a culture where theres no such thing as a fashion magazine dont page, because everyone is respected as a person, regardless of what their body looks like or how they choose to cover / uncover it. I notice that when photographers do this to people, they usually show a headless body, or a shot from the back. Because heaven forbid we should see the persons face, look into their eyes, and realize that this is a human being who deserves to be treated with dignity.
