Today’s story is: Page 8 of Five Acres and a Creek The new family who were shifting into our home were lovely people and wanted to keep the fishpond and the fish, so thankfully the fish didn’t have to move home, but we still had to shift two humans, a dog, two cats and around 20 peachface parrots because our old home’s new family needed the flight aviary for their birds. Our peachface family started a couple of years earlier with one little lost bird that flew in, allowed himself to be easily caught by Roy and who then ate happily and voraciously through anything that was put in front of him, so it must have been a hungry time for him out there in the big free world. We felt sorry for the poor little chap so Roy built him a big flight aviary in the backyard amongst the palm jungle. The little bird wasn’t native to Australia and obviously couldn’t look after himself in the wild but in that big aviary he could still fly around and feel free, while getting regular food and being safe. I wasn’t as practical; I bought him a wife for company which in hindsight may not have been the best idea although both peachfaces appeared to be quite pleased at the time. However, we now had around 20 peachface parrots living with us that we needed to convey to the Tablelands. A friend with an empty aviary very kindly offered to house our peachfaces until we could build them another aviary on the Tablelands, but we would have to take Little Un with us in a cage because he just wouldn’t settle down in an aviary. Little Un was one of the peachface babies who had fallen out of the nest so we hand-reared him. Roy said we couldn’t name him because he was going to go back to the aviary, so Little Un he became.
