Todd is Tops in Poles Gallup, N.M. – Kathryn Todd had already won a round of pole bending at the ninth annual National Junior High Finals Rodeo at Red Rock Park, so she wasn’t worried about grabbing the top spot again in round two on Thursday morning. Second in the round – for now – is just fine for the Tuttle, Okla., cowgirl. She and her 10-year-old horse, Dualy, teamed up for a 2.400-second run that moved her to second in the second round and first in the average. The 2013 Oklahoma Junior High Rodeo All-Around Cowgirl is also representing her state in girls breakaway roping, ribbon roping and barrel racing this week. “I just wanted to be clean and not hit any barrels,” said Kathryn, who finished seventh in poles at the 2012 NJHFR as a sixth grader. “I just wanted to stay up near the top in the average. Last year, I came back to the short go in barrels and poles, but my hit a barrel and my horse spooked a little in the poles.” Kathryn’s horse is a former cutting horse that has been carrying her in the poles for the last three years, and is “ornery as heck. He spooks at anything. He spotted a white napkin in the snow and spooked. I always have to stay aware when I’m on him.” And yet, the horse has a knack for the poles. The two won the first round with a 20.345-second run – the second-fastest time of the week – and lead the average by nearly half a second over Sadie Levine of California. Levine took the lead in the second round on Thursday morning with the fastest run of the week when she stopped the clock at 20.092 seconds. Here in four events, Kathryn hoped to compete for the all-around, but figures she’s a long shot after missing her calf in the first round. So, she’s concentrating on an event title (or two), figuring she’s still got a chance in barrels as well as poles. But maybe she isn’t out of it just yet. She was sitting first in the all-around cowgirl standings after the Thursday morning performance.
