(James Dougherty, 7NEWS) A 19-month-old boy, traveling with a group of transients, was mauled on his face and neck by a pit bull in Commerce City on Sunday night, police said. The toddler was rushed to Childrens Hospital Colorado with serious injuries. The 90-pound dog asphyxiated on the catch poles used to capture it. The dog died at the Adams County animal shelter, police said. The dog had been tethered to a pole when it attacked the boy. The child went to give the dog a hug, and it latched onto his face, said Commerce City police spokesman Chris Dickey. Charges are pending against the owner, he said. The dozen people in the group apparently were homeless and traveling together in motor homes, Dickey said. They were camping in the parking lot of the King Soopers at U.S. 85 and East 62nd Avenue. The child and the dog were among the group when the attack happened at about 7:30 p.m.
