Together we can save an entire village. Here’s how. When the floods occurred on August 9th this year in Bihar, the villagers in Purbithata of Khagaria district had a no reason to worry. The Child Friendly Flood Shelter in the village was their saviour, where over 300 people took shelter. The shelter acted as an hero in other ways too. The rice stored there helped the villagers subsist for many days. All thanks to the community maintained ‘Grain Bank’, where women from the village arduously contributed one handful of grain every month, to help them sustain during the floods. “If it were not for this shelter, we all would have died”, said an aged resident of the village. Families staying in the shelter were happy and grateful to Save the Children and its partner NGO Nav Jagriti for this initiative. This shelter is a huge relief to the flood-prone communities of the region.
