Tolkiens epics: The Lord of the Rings, Silmarillion and The - TopicsExpress

Tolkiens epics: The Lord of the Rings, Silmarillion and The Hobbit, in Tolkeins opinion, were not just some transcendent idea. He spent many years, first, developing the languages of his characters (since he was a linguist and loved language from the time his mother read to him as a child before she died in his youth). He spent hours upon hours working on the languages of the dwarves and hobbits and mapping out Middle Earth. Then, it occurred to him, to find out the story of the people who spoke these languages and tell their story. That is it. He did not feel like he invented these epic tales. He felt like he simply discovered them. Nonetheless, he labored and meticulously edited and re-wrote these books in snippets of time on lunch break; late at night after the kids had gone to bed by his coal fire in cold England. One could imagine that a parent would disapprove of such nonsense and so much time and obsession on such bizarre daydreams. But, Tolkein was a lonely orphan. Truly, it appears that this alternate world full of epic battles between good and evil must have been a salve to the lonely boy. It was precious to him, and he kept it with him throughout his whole life and, most importantly, he shared it with the world.
