Tollywood has gone all Bollywood in the Bengali film Boss. Starring Tollywood superstar Jeet, the trailer tells us about a man who comes to rule the underworld of Mumbai city, to become the king. With Boss, the makers have ventured into Mumbai as the setting of the film, which is new for the regional audience. As of till date, all the criminal/ action based film of Tollywood had its base in Bengal and the local gangs. As the trailer suggests, Shurjo, played by Jeet reaches Mumbai, a place declared void of all criminals, to become the unquestioned king of the feared Mumbai underworld. Packed with action and catchy dialogues, the trailer propagates a typical Tollywood masalas movie. It has all the ingredients of a probable blockbuster- a super star (Jeet being one of the biggest stars of Tollywood today), pretty girl, action, romance, drama and exotic location shot songs. It must be confusing to read compliments for a typical masalas movie. You must be wondering what is so great about it. It is a big deal, because the target audience Boss comprises of a huge chunk of the regional audience. There is a distinct separation of classes as far as the Bengali movie catering to the regional audience is concerned. One category is that of the intellectual films, the likes of Late Rituparno Ghosh and Aparna Sen cater to. Such films have a strong content and are like surreal poems. The languages the films are made in are pure Bengali or English (eg. The Japanese Wife by Aparna Sen). They are void of sleaze and make a deep impact on the audience. The audience for such films is limited to the intellectual or as the Bengalis has come to call the elite or buddhujivi class. The more popular, mainstream cinema consists of the typical masalas movies. Superstars like Jeet and Dev are the ones who bear such films on their young shoulders. The content of such films are generic. As long as these young heartthrobs star in the films with scantily clad pretty face actress, such movies work. These movies mostly fall within two genre, romance and action. These films only have Bengali as the medium of language, apart from that; there is no difference between them and Bollywood masalas movies. Boss falls in the category of one such Tollywood masalas movie. The dialogues as shown in the trailer of this film are cleverly written with big doses of crude language. Jeet is like Salman Khan of Tollywood. He is the new age action hero. With his unconventional looks, the audience has been in love with him for years because he is a good actor. And judging from the glimpse we got from the trailer of the film, Jeet’s dialogues are definitely going to elicit a myriad of whistles and hoots in the theaters. For those of you who understand Bengali, you will enjoy this typical Tollywood masala movie with smart dialogues, and for those of you who don’t, well, you can still enjoy the trailer, for language is no barrier in cinema right?
