Tom Eden is not easily shocked. However, even I will admit to being surprised by the number of couples who had chosen to join me in sampling the delicacies of the taf this morning. With only a solitary Guinness for company, it was only natural for me to ponder, and within a mere fifteen minutes, the answer struck me. Today is Valentines day. The day where the seeds of love are first sown, seeds, which with careful nurturing, can grow and blossom into a passionate romance. Naturally, my thoughts turned to how I came to know my very own love, that bastion of botanicism that many of you know as The Eden Project. Or Cardiff Student Media. Elected as VP Expedia and Gardening on the back of a promise to turn CSM into the Unions very own Garden of Eden, I dived into my new job with relish. However, I soon discovered that I had a task on my hands. The previous gardener, Chris Williams, was seemingly capable, but his tenancy had left the proudest bush in the allotment more a gair weed than anything else, and it was only with the help of my esteemed shrub-editor, Jacob Dirntuber, that I was able to revive it. I took inspiration from days gone by, and after much searching, managed to source the same variety of phlox-pop that stood so proud in the early 90s, which now forms the centrepiece of the gardens Opinion section under the watchful eye of Gareth Evans. I also innovated. I gave attention to the Martyn Flower in a way that no gardener had done before; when it eventually blossomed and SportPollenated, it was a sight to behold; the envious looks from Swanseas gardeners were a testament to that. But I didnt stop there. Delegating tasks seems to have paid off, well, as Michael OConnell-Davidson tells me that the Quench gardens HortiCulture section has gone from strength to strength, and he himself has innovated with an area devoted to pure fertilizer, most of which is provided by a local merchant called Jimmy Dung. I think he calls the space music. However, I want to take CSM into the 21st century. I want Cardiffs students to have the full multi-media gardening experience. So it is with great relish that I announce that Kayleigh Chan has done a fantastic job with the Unions gardening channel SeedUTV, and the same must be said about Matt Jones and Samuel Lloyd, who have done an equally commendable job with the healthy eating audio phenomenon, xCress radio. Anyway, I digress. Today reminded me that just as all relationships must start somewhere, they must end somewhere too. Maintaining a garden is not easy, its an energy-sapling task that few can do over a sustained period of time. I know I wont be in this game for long. I love my job, I love the people who make it what it is, and I certainly love my 20k. However, Im going to have to move on one day. And I know that when that day comes, deep down, Ill be more releaved that a deciduous tree after winter.
