Tom Petty Gets Royalties from Sam Smiths Stay With Me Because It Sounds Like I Wont Back Down TOM PETTY and JEFF LYNNE have been given songwriting credit for SAM SMITHs Stay With Me, because it sounds like Pettys 1989 song I Wont Back Down, which they wrote. The writers of Stay With Me claim they werent familiar with the Petty song when they wrote it, but they gave in without a fight because they realized the songs were similar. what do you think, #indy?
