Tom was a single guy living at home with his father and working in the family business. When his father fell ill, he realized that he would soon inherit a large fortune of millions of dollars. He decided he needed a wife with whom to share his fortune. One evening at a social gathering of investors he spotted the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Her natural beauty took his breath away. “I may look like just an ordinary man,” he said to her, “but in a short time, my father will die and I’ll inherit 35 million dollars.” Impressed, the woman obtained his business card. Two weeks later Tom met the beautiful woman again at his elderly father’s wedding — she became his new stepmother. The Bible tells us that pride goes before destruction. In other words, when we get into pride things can start falling apart on us rather quickly. Like the young man who proudly boasted of his soon to be wealth, we too can suffer loss when we choose to walk before others in pride.
