Tommy is scheduled for surgery on December 11. The surgery is not cancer-related but is to repair an incisional hernia. The hernia is a result of the surgery he had to remove his kidney when he was first diagnosed with kidney cancer; it is on the right side of his stomach and it has grown quite large and is causing him a lot of discomfort. The decision to have any surgery for someone on chemo is a difficult one, but after talking with the doctors, we feel that we are doing the best thing. His cancer doctor said that he would not give Tommy approval for surgery if he didnt think he could get through it, so that is encouraging. Even so, the surgeon said that given the size of the hernia, the surgery can not be done laparoscopically; we will spend a little time in the hospital. We will certainly appreciate your keeping us in your thoughts during this time. After the surgery, the rest of our holidays will be healing days, which is just fine with us! If Tommy is doing well and recuperating as expected, he will begin treatments again in Nashville on December 24.
