Tommys Guitar Picks: By Thomas R. Jenney... Hofner Electric Guitars and basses were first made available in The United Kingdom in 1958, and by the early 1960s these were the favored instruments of pop/skiffle bands fronted by young aspiring musicians. The Hofner Senator Guitar was purchased by the young John Lennon, and The Beatles first bass player Stu Sutcliffe favored a Hofner Senator archtop bass with brunette finish and Nova-Sonic pickup selectors on its 20 1/4 inch body. Paul McCartney purchased a Hofner 500/1 bass, which became associated with him immediately and known as a Beatle Bass. Soon Hofner violin basses carried McCartneys likeness on their box in music stores with a personalized message from Paul, despite the fact that the Beatle never asked to be re-imbursed or struck a formal endorsement deal. Paul McCartney still uses a Hofner 500/1 on stage to this day.
