Tomorrow AmeriCorps Hoopa Tribal CCC will be Partnering with the High Sierra Volunteer Trail Crew, the Northcoast Environmental Center, the Trinity County Resource Conservation District, and the Integral Ecology Research Center, the Watershed Center in helping cleanups of trespass marijuana growing on public lands in Trinity County. Trespass marijuana grows are an overlooked source of serious environmental damage. Fertilizers, toxic pesticides, caustic poisons, garbage, and illegal water diversions are all part of the impact of trespass grow sites. These chemicals seep into the soil, poison local wildlife, and pollute watersheds and rivers. Many of these grow sites are also very large, ranging in size from a few acres to a few miles wide. In aggregate, the impact of trespass grow sites is very significant. There is not adequate funding for the costly clean-up of these sites. Local environmental organizations are partnering with law enforcement to help organize these clean-ups in Trinity County. We will be working alongside, and overseen by, law enforcement during these days. Law enforcement entities will sweep the areas prior to our arrival to ensure our safety. Trained professionals will be working to collect any toxic materials as well as work with the helicopter that will be transporting waste.· The work is strenuous. The locations of trespass grows are in extremely rugged terrain. Clean-up days will last about eight hours, and involve hiking and hauling of garbage up steep terrain.· TCCC will see interesting things and learn a lot. TCCC will see how these illegal marijuana farms operate, learn about how law enforcement finds and eradicates them, and see the reality of the rugged conditions that those involved in trespass marijuana operations are living in.·
