Tomorrow (Dec 9) the Democrats in the U.S. Senate plan to release the so-called Torture Report, detailing alleged atrocities committed by the C.I.A. during the George W. Bush administration while the C. I. A. was interrogating terrorist leaders. According to numerous national security experts, this is an insane idea, and by releasing the previously classified information, the senate Democrats will be weakening our national security even more than it already is. The President approves of the release of this classified information. WTF is going on here? The Democrats lost the Senate and got even further in the hole in the House of Representatives. Are they just pulling one last massive act of spite against the Bush administration (whose approval rating, by the way, is currently significantly higher than that of Obama, according to polls)? Let me make a few guesses-- 1) with Jonathan Gruber scheduled to testify in Congress tomorrow, this will create a convenient smoke screen to take the publics focus away from that event, which could prove catastrophic for the Obama administration and its scared Affordable Care Act; 2) it will be one last, desperate effort to discredit the Bush administration, which in retrospect, is beginning to look pretty good compared to what we have now; 3) it is just plain infantile revenge upon the American people for snatching awaycontrol of the legislative branch of government, something to which they believe they have a divine right. There is one thing for sure: this action will further divide the country, which is already the most divided it has been since the Civil War of the 1860s. It could push us ever more ominously close to Civil War II--something a lot of Experts (in a number of countries) have been predicting for several years.
